What is EDGE?

EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution) is a technology of high-speed data transmission for GSM networks. To the moment the EDGE configuration in the MegaCom network enables data transmission with the speed till 236 kbps that is by 3 times faster than GPRS.

EDGE can be considered as a technology of transition to the 3G networks, that will allow subscribers to use innovative services of the third generation, such as: high-speed access to Internet, video and audio streaming, loading video, etc. in fact many operators of mobile communication consider the EDGE standard as an economically efficient and effective alternative to 3G.

What advantages EDGE offers?

The basic advantage of EDGE is availability of high-speed data transmission that makes access to Internet and WAP networks faster and effective; it also allows reducing time for sending and receiving of MMS messages, thus providing subscribers with the possibility to reach a higher level of mobility and efficiency.

For owners of mobile phones supporting EDGE and already using the services, which are based on the GPRS technology, transition to a new technology will be rather smooth because such phones switch to the EDGE technology automatically, without any additional options. My phone supports EDGE. Do I need any additional installations?

No. Internet, WAP and MMS installations, which are common for the GPRS technology, are sufficient.

What speed of data transmission can be expected from use of EDGE?

When the EDGE technology is applied the connection speed is by 3 times higher than it is with GPRS, and it can reach 236 kilobit a second. The speed of connection can be lower because of peculiarities of a mobile phone or high load in the network.

The MMS service is also priced according to the standard fee for a message. EDGE is an addition to GPRS (sometimes EDGE is called the high-speed GPRS), that means availability of all services for mobile EDGE terminals without changing of tariffs. In other words there are more advantages for the same money.
